My Story
Hi! I am Dr Emmily.
My roots lie in Suriname, a South American country, north of Brazil. My teenage years were spent on Aruba, one happy island in the Caribbean. I left my tiny paradise to study in Europe (the Netherlands), where I completed my medical degree and psychiatry specialist training. As I am an adventurous spirit, I ventured out and worked in different countries, including Australia and Bonaire (another tiny island in the Caribbean). I am so grateful for these experiences, for I feel the knowledge and learnings I have been gifted through these experiences, make for a richer personal and professional life.

I have worked in mental health for over 15 years now. Over time, I have developed an interest in working with a specific group of people; health care professionals. This is a niche group of people with profession-specific risks and needs. I first started learning about the unique health care needs of health professionals, when I became a patient myself. I decided to study this phenomenon and the more I studied, the more I realised the health care system is experiencing a long-term pandemic itself – health professionals’ health needs not being met. This leads to a workforce that is tired, unhappy and unwell.
My aim is to be a pioneer amongst others in this field; helping health professionals take holistic control of their personal and professional health and wellbeing. This can be done in many ways and through EMMlife, I believe I can make this happen.
